George's Creek Wins 2008 Quiz Bowl

The 14th Annual Maryland Facts Quiz Bowl was held in the theater at Allegany College of Maryland on January 30, 2008. A team of seven fourth grade students represented each elementary school in the county. This year’s champions were from George’s Creek Elementary School led by advisors Jamie Clark and Beth McKenzie. The remaining teams that participated in the Championship Round of the competition included Parkside Elementary, 2nd place; South Penn Elementary, 3rd place tie; and Frost Elementary, 3rd place tie. Medals were donated by Personal Best Athletics and were presented by Dr. William AuMiller, Superintendent of Schools, Robert McKenzie, Director of Elementary Education and the event judges.

This competition created an enthusiasm for learning facts about Maryland, allowed students to showcase their talents, and reinforced prior classroom learning. Students from all schools studied diligently and performed extremely well throughout the contest. Each participant received a prize bag and a commemorative t-shirt.

Toni Detar and Jill Wire, South Penn Elementary School advisors, lead the Pledge of Allegiance with the 5th grade assistants and 2007 Quiz Bowl winners, who included Amber Ashley, Morgan Cranford, Michala Garrison, Cynthia Grabenstein, Olivia Howard, Raquel Malcolm, and Makayla Siebert.

The judges for the event included Mr. Al Feldstein, who served as the lead judge, Mr. Dan Whetzel, and Mr. Al Hammond. Mr. Scott Llewellyn, Mt. Savage Elementary School vice principal, participated as the game rules announcer and timekeeper. Mr. Bob Stevenson, Beall Elementary School principal, assisted with photography, while Mrs. Jill Keating and Mr. John Close, Technology Infusion Specialists, acted as the scorekeepers. Mr. Kerry Kelly, Principal at Northeast Elementary School, and Mr. Dan Clark, George’s Creek Elementary School Principal, were the quiz bowl moderators. Ms. Kim Smith, Principal of Frost Elementary, was in charge of program distribution, and Mrs. Sharon Morgan, Principal of Flintstone Elementary, and Mrs. Pat Kaylor, Board of Education secretary, conducted the registration and presented the prize bags and certificates. The event was directed by Lisa Stevenson, Coordinator of Acceleration and Enrichment Programs.

Sponsors of the 2008 Maryland Facts Quiz Bowl included the Allegany County Public Elementary Schools, Personal Best Athletics, Utz, Potomac Farms, and Allegany County Teachers Federal Credit Union.
