 Allegany High School Holds NHS Induction Ceremony

26 New Members Met Standards of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character

On Tuesday, October 21, 2008, Allegany High School’s Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) held its annual induction ceremony welcoming 26 new members into the organization. Conducting the school-wide ceremony were Colby Smith, President; Natalie Maslow, Vice-President; Christina Knieriem, Secretary/Historian; and Ethan Sagin, Treasurer.

The ceremony’s keynote speaker, chosen by the members of the NHS, was Mrs. Desiree Witt, music educator at Allegany High School. Other speakers included Dr. William AuMiller, Superintendent of Schools, and Mr. Mike Calhoun, principal of Allegany High School.

Ms. Lori Brown and Mrs. Kay Sheehe, teachers and co-advisors of the NHS, stated “Members of the National Honor Society are recognized leaders who make exemplary contributions to their school and community. Membership into the NHS is a distinct honor and is important in college admission.” The Faculty Advisory Committee at Allegany also includes Mr. James Bucy, Mr. Edwin Dunn, Mrs. Betsy Geiger, and Mr. Joseph Wilson.

The sixteen current members of NHS in addition to the officers, inducted last year, who also participated in this year’s ceremony included: Danielle Class, Wolfgang Hofacker, Justin Hymes, Lindsay Laird, Daniel Levitas, Jenna Mathews, Devin McGregor, Alex Shin, Luke Tompkins, Olivia Wolz, Stephanie Yates, and Brianne Zimmerman.

The National Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for high school students. Chapters exist in 75% of the nation’s high schools, and since 1921 millions of students have been selected for membership. Additionally, thousands of dollars in scholarships have been awarded to senior members since 1945 by the sponsoring organization, The National Association of Secondary School Principals.

The new members meeting high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character were selected by the Faculty Advisory Committee. Students inducted were as follows: Seniors – Emily Dordevic, Brian Jones, Elizabeth Miller, Ama Mosieri, Marissa Nedved, Lindsey Russell, Julie Summerfield, and Tiffanie Williams; Juniors – Ryan Alderson, Nicholas Amick, Kelly Baker, Amber Beckman, Zachary Bosley, Katlin Joyce, Jeremy Knipple, Christopher Logsdon, Hillary Lyons, Ryan Marchini, Oliver Miltenberger, Stephen Nelson, Joshua Trott, Oliva Umpierre, and Morgan Walbert; Honorary Members/Exchange Students – Alexander Evertz (Germany), Andrea Maracci (Italy), and Piyaphat Sunthonpatcharakul (Thailand).
