Elementary Schools Get Abundance of School Supplies, Nearly $300 in Cash Donations
On Friday, August 17, 2012, the County United Way and the LaVale Wal-Mart partnered to sponsor a local school supply donation initiative entitled “Stuff the Bus.” The day-long campaign was successful in collecting an abundance of school supplies and nearly $300 in cash donations for elementary schools in the Allegany County Public School System. Bishop Walsh and Calvary Christian Academy will also receive donations from the drive.
County United Way volunteers were on-hand from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. the day of the campaign to supervise and aid in the school supply collection efforts. Donations including spiral notebooks, protractors, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, folders, binders, glue, scissors, and more were among the items collected for students. The cash donations will be used to purchase book bags for students in need.
According to Dee Blank, Supervisor of Elementary Education for the public school system, “We are so appreciative of the support from the County United Way for spearheading this drive. It’s huge step towards academic success when kids walk through our doors, and we have the ability to give them the tools they need to be ready to learn.” She went on to say, “I’d like to thank the staff at Cresaptown Elementary School for storing and sorting all of the donations until we were able to distribute them to our schools.”
Donations from the “Stuff the Bus” campaign are still being accepted. For more information, contact Linda Toey at 301-722-2700 or via email at ltoey@allconet.org.
