25 New Members Meet Standards of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character
On Wednesday, October 19, 2011, Allegany High School’s Chapter of the National Honor Society held its annual induction ceremony welcoming 25 new members into the organization. Conducting the school-wide ceremony were Breyer Hillegas, President; Elijah Biggs, Vice-President; Morgan Mayer, Secretary/Historian; and Lane Walbert, Treasurer. The ceremony’s keynote speaker, chosen by members of the NHS, was James Bucy, math teacher at Allegany and the school’s current Teacher of the Year representative.
Lori Brown and Kay Sheehe, teachers and members of the Faculty Council of the National Honor Society, noted that “Members of the National Honor Society are recognized leaders who make exemplary contributions to their school and community. Students go through a rigorous process to be inducted into this chapter.” They went on to say “Membership into the NHS is a distinct honor.” The Faculty Council at Allegany also includes James Bucy, Betsy Geiger, Debra Slider, and Kevin Wallace.
New members meeting high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character were selected by a committee of faculty members. These inductees were as follows: (seniors) Colum Dillon, Ashley Forbes, Sarah Horn, Emily Vanmeter; (juniors) Hayden Bosley, Urvashi Dayalan, Adeline Eisentrout, Kaitlyn Grimm, Haley Hixon, Robert Knieriem, Corey Knipple, Hayley Kurtz, Benjamin Levitas, Whisper Malcolm, Alexia Mauzy, Deonna Middleton, Kristin Sell, Samantha Upole, Kaitlyn Wharton, Rachel Witmer; (honorary foreign exchange students) Chaiyarerk Aksornpreechanon from Thailand; Patrick Blumli from Germany; Rodrigo Duarte from Paraguay; Debby Peplies from Germany; and Andrea Senin from Italy.
Current members of the NHS, inducted last year, also participated in the ceremony. These students are as follows: Elijah Biggs, Melissa Courtney, Anna Crow, Samuel Dusenbery, Hannah Elliott, Colin Geatz, Sara Glasbrenner, Sage Hartlaub, Breyer Hillegas, Kara Hotchkiss, Morgan Mayer, Evan McIntyre, Courtney McKay, Carson Phillips, Ittie Rehani, Cierra Roberts, Julia Robinson, Christine Schroeder, Alexa Sivic, Cheyenne Smith, Lane Walbert, and Lauren Winterberg.
The National Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for high school students. Chapters exist in 75% of the nation’s high schools, and since 1921 millions of students have been selected for membership. Thousands of dollars in scholarships have been awarded to senior members since 1945 by the sponsoring organization, The National Association of Secondary School Principals. Each participating school develops bylaws which must be approved by the NASSP.
