 Unified Tennis Begins This Fall

Bocce Ball Successful Last Year; Track and Field to be Offered this Spring

The Allegany County Public School System will be offering unified tennis in high schools beginning this fall. Maryland public schools are the first in the country to adopt this program which combines special education and regular education students onto one athletic team. The school system introduced unified bocce ball last year, and the program proved very successful. Plans to offer unified track and field in the spring are underway.

Unified tennis matches, which will be played as tournament style doubles matches, are scheduled to begin in October and will be held in Garrett County and at Mountain Ridge High School. Preliminary matches will establish rankings for state playoff matches. These matches will be held in Frederick, Maryland, at the Baker Park Tennis Courts on Wednesday, October 26, 2011.

Any high school student who meets the criteria for their schools’ tennis team is eligible to participate in unified tennis. Sign-ups and recruitment meetings are currently being held in each high school. Interested students should contact their school’s Athletic Director for more information.
