Fort Hill Wins Varsity Debate, Allegany Wins JV Debate
On Friday, April 23, 2010, Fort Hill High School hosted the 2nd Annual Mary Louise Jones Debate Tournament named in memory of the school system’s late Social Studies Supervisor. Fort Hill’s team was victorious in the varsity debate while Allegany’s team won the junior varsity debate.
All three of Allegany County’s public high schools competed in the event. The varsity teams debated “The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is justified as passed by the 111th Congress and signed by the 44th President of the United States.” The junior varsity teams debated “The U.S. Congress should pass a Cap-and-Trade Bill, such as the Waxman-Markey Cap-and-Trade Bill of 2009.” The debate schedule offered three rounds, and winning criteria included the most wins, head-to-head winner, and most total points.
Judges for the event included Kara Kennell, Al Feldstein, Jen Windle, and Vicki Day. Special thanks go to Dan Whetzel, Social Studies Supervisor; Matthew Ravenscroft, Mountain Ridge High School team advisor; Wesley Cooper, Allegany High School team advisor; and the staff, administration, custodial staff, and secretarial staff of Fort Hill High School.
