Allegany County has four middle schools, and an alternative education program for middle school students. Students in grades 6 through 8 attend one of the four middle schools, Braddock, Mount Savage, Washington or Westmar.
Curriculum and Instruction in the middle school reflects the skills and content knowledge identified in the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum (VSC) by grade level. In addition, Skills for Success are meant to be part of each of the four core content areas (English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science). The Skills for Success include Learning Skills, Thinking Skills, Communication Skills, Technology Skills and Interpersonal Skills. All middle school students will take the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) each spring. The MSA focuses on English/Language Arts/Reading as well as Mathematics content. Students are categorized as either Basic, Proficient, or Advanced in their grade level skills. These assessments help prepare students for the rigors of high school and ensure that ACPS are meeting our goals in promoting academic achievement.
