Reading/Language Arts

The elementary PreK-5 reading program framework includes a ninety minute reading timeframe utilizing either the Houghton Mifflin or Scott Foresman scientifically researched based core program.  Instruction is aligned with Maryland's Voluntary State Curriculum for reading and provides students with instruction which develops phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills utilizing informational and literary text.  Before, during, and after reading strategies are used by students to construct meaning.    Listening and speaking skills as well as the writing process are included in language arts instruction.  Please see the links at the right for a detailed description of the reading curriculum.  Students are provided whole group and flexible group instructional activities designed to differentiate learning based on student needs.

All schools utilize the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) in kindergarten through grade 3 to assess student achievement and identify students for appropriate reading intervention programs.  All schools utilize reading intervention programs designed to close the achievement gap for identified students.

Reading First

Reading First is a federally funded program of No Child Left Behind (NCLB).  It is designed to help school districts prevent reading difficulties by establishing high- quality, comprehensive reading instruction by well-trained teachers in kindergarten through grade 3. West Side and George's Creek Elementary Schools have been designated as Reading First Schools and are utilizing the Houghton Mifflin Reading program.
