Production Scheduled for November 29th, 30th at the School
The Allegany High School drama club will be performing “Eat: It’s Not about Food,” written by Linda Daughtery and co-directed by Michael Hartman and Jackie Wadsworth. Performance will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2012, and Friday, November 30, 2012, at 7 p.m. in Allegany’s auditorium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and tickets will be sold at the door for a cost of $5.
The production is a compelling story about modern society’s obsession with being thin and the effects this behavior has on today’s average youth. The play begins with a young waitress, played by Vanessa Young, explaining how everyday eating isn’t as simple for some people as it seems. The story is focused around the point of view of Amy, played by Brianna Olinger, a teenager struggling with anorexia. Amy’s long road to recovery is marred by hospitalization, therapy, miscellaneous set-backs, and the realization that what she is doing is also hurting those she loves. Amy’s parents are played by Gary Michael Hartman and Madeline Watson.
A relatively small cast portrays a variety of characters in the story, from young girls jealous of models in Seventeen Magazine, to high school wrestlers taking any means necessary to make their weight class, to mothers whose obsessive dieting adversely affects their children. Audience members will be able to relate to at least one of these real-world characters. The play will leave not only an emotional impact on viewers, but will also hopefully motivate audience members to make changes in their own lives.
