Allegany County FFA Receives Grant

Nationwide Program Supports Local Chapter to Engage in Service-Learning Project

The Allegany County FFA chapter recently received a $2,000 grant from the National FFA Organization’s Living to Serve: Environmental Grant program provided through funding from CSX as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. The group’s year-long project will begin later this month.

The local chapter has devised a plan to combat an environmental issue in the community through the implementation of a walking path that will highlight native tree species and include interesting facts and characteristics specific to that tree type. The trail is located behind the Center for Career and Technical Education and will be used as a learning tool for the students enrolled in the center’s Agriculture Science skill area.

The National FFA Organization makes grant funds available for FFA chapters to develop service-learning projects that impact environmental issues within their respective communities. Chapters can apply for up to $2,000 to support service-learning projects focused on addressing local environmental needs.

Jamie Snider is the advisor for the Allegany County FFA and the Career Center’s Ag Science skill area teacher. For more information on the National FFA Organization, visit www.ffa.org.
