Planning for Frostburg’s Bicentennial Grand Feature Parade set for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2012, is nearing completion. The Parade will be one of the highlighted events during the Saturday of the Signature Weekend that will also include the FSU Appalachian Festival, a concert by Country Music Star Kathy Mattea and a “Mountain Side Fireworks Display”. The Fireworks Display will be coordinated to music broadcast on WFWM 91.9 FM Radio. There are many other events beginning on Thursday, September 13 and running through Sunday, September 16.
Parade planners revealed that six high school marching bands have already committed to the Parade including Mt. Ridge, Allegany, Hampshire, Southern Garrett, Northern Garrett and Meyersdale Area High School. In addition there will be a Parade Division dedicated to Frostburg State University which will include the FSU Bobcat Band. Other special Divisions include one dedicated to Veterans and one dedicated to Law Enforcement.
The current Mayor and Council will be joined in the Parade by the living former Mayors and City Administrators along with former Senator John Hafer. Maryland’s Lt. Governor Anthony Brown will lead a contingent of current elected officials including Congressman Roscoe Bartlett, State Senator George Edwards and Delegates Kevin Kelly and Wendell Beitzel and the Allegany County Commissioners.
Cars from the Classy Chassis Car Club along with numerous volunteer Fire Departments, the Garrett Highland Pipes and Drums, the Frostburg Dance Academy, the Beall High Class of 1956 and the Potomac Valley Equestrian Team will also be seen in the Parade. Many other participants will march down Main Street from Armstrong Avenue to Bowery Street beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Parade planners noted that there is still time for groups to submit their Parade Application to be included in this special Bicentennial Parade Event. The final deadline for Applications is August 24, 2012. Applications are available at City Hall. Volunteers are also needed to assist with the Parade Line Up and other duties.
