From the Desk of Mrs. Smith

August 2010

Dear Parents / Guardians,

On behalf of the faculty and staff of Frost Elementary School, it is my sincere pleasure to welcome you and your children to another wonderful year of learning. It is our goal that each child will learn, grow and develop every day at Frost Elementary School. Our desire is to provide academic excellence and character development in a warm and supportive climate. Allegany County has adopted a new reading series, Macmillan/McGraw-Hill’s,Treasures. Teachers are looking forward to using the new materials in their classrooms. This year promises to be filled with both challenges and great opportunities that will surely impact and improve the quality of education provided to your children.

During a very short summer, our custodial staff worked hard to get our building ready for the new school year. Many thanks to Butch, Bonnie and Paula for spending their summer months scrubbing, waxing, polishing and painting to make our school shine. We are proud to have such an outstanding custodial staff at Frost Elementary School. We are fortunate to have so many people work together to provide the very best learning environment possible for our students.

Student safety is a top priority in Allegany Public Schools. Please read the information in our handbook and the emergency information packet to learn about these important details and save the information for future reference. Video surveillance cameras will be operating in Frost school to provide a safe and secure environment and deter inappropriate behavior or illegal activity on school property. Signs have been posted at entrances of our school making visitors aware of camera use. Video surveillance is intended for the purpose of reviewing an alleged incident that may compromise the safety or security of our school grounds.

We would like to persuade parents to have an active role in their child’s education while at Frost Elementary School. PTA is a crucial organization in our school to which we hope all parents support. Once again this year, Parent Workshops are scheduled for Wednesday mornings. We encourage you to participate as often as you can. Parent volunteers help with a variety of activities at Frost. Parent conferences are an important means for parents and teachers to work together to help a child’s progress and success. Our first Parent Conference Day is scheduled for Thursday, September 30th , from 11:30 am – 7:00 pm. Assignment notebooks are a daily means of communication with your child’s teacher and the school. Your child needs you to be actively involved with the assignment notebook and to supervise study habits and completion of homework. Our Wednesday folders will extend that communication with the school. Your child will benefit from your participation in his/her education. Please plan to be active in many of the opportunities parents will be given to be involved with the students at Frost Elementary School.

One of our goals is to see that parents, like the students themselves, feel at home at Frost Elementary School. Our school website, http://boe.allconet.org/fs and monthly newsletter provide parents with information about events and school activities.

At the beginning of the year there is much information that we request from our parents. Please complete the forms located at the back of this handbook and return them to school. This information is needed for the safety and welfare of your child.

We would like to invite you to meet our faculty and staff, to learn of expectations for the school year, visit your child’s classroom, meet other parents, and become involved in child’s educational program by attending our “Back to School Night” being held at 6:30, on Wednesday, September 8, 2010.

Our school offers many services to promote a quality education for the students of Frost Elementary School. Strong parental and community support enhances the quality of education. We hope you visit the school often. Please come meet with us, attend parent conferences, join PTA, and volunteer your time and energy. We know that your involvement, combined with the efforts of our outstanding faculty, will make this school year a rich and rewarding year for your child. We are here for our students; if you need our assistance please feel free to contact the school at (301) 689-5168.

I hope we have an exciting, successful year that allows us to meet the challenges and goals we have for this new school year. Thank you in advance for your continued support of Frost Elementary School.

Sincerely,

Kim Smith, Principal
