From the Desk of Mrs. Smith

November 2009

Dear Frost Students and Parents,

Frost Elementary School enjoyed having our parents visit our school during National School Lunch Week. We had 238 parents visit our school cafeteria. We appreciate all of the hard work our cafeteria ladies did to make healthy meals.

For the second year Coach Dave Calcutta has brought Frostburg State University football players to volunteer at our school. Players visited classrooms to read a teacher selected book related to the grade level curriculum. Our students enjoyed getting to know the players and having them read in their classrooms. On October 30th, Coach Calcutta, Coach Fred Wall, Coach Brian Basile and the football players led the students in a sing-a-long celebration to end this year’s program! The FSU football players stressed the importance of reading. They have been great role models for our students!

We are well underway with this year’s Accelerated Reading Program. Our 2009-2010 school goal is 4,500 points. Please encourage your child to be an active reader and earn points by taking Accelerated Reader tests in the computer lab. We hope students are setting their own reading goals so they will participate in our Accelerated Reader Celebration at the end of the year! Mrs. Hall is awarding prizes throughout the school year for students who obtain a specific number of points. We would like to thank the parents who volunteer to help students in the computer lab with Accelerated Reading testing. Please support our reading program by encouraging your child to join in the fun and develop a love for reading at the same time. Our end-of-the-year program depends on it !!

Our students have been participating in the “Kids Helping Kids” campaign. Students have been busy collecting canned goods for the Western Maryland Food Bank. Participating students have been wearing crazy hats, team shirts, bedroom slippers, red, white and blue outfits and crazy outfits this week. It has been fun to be part of this meaningful campaign. The many stacks of canned goods sitting in our cafeteria prove how much our families care about others. We are proud of our students.

Sincerely,

Kim Smith, Principal
