INTERNET SAFETY LESSONS:

All library media classes grades K-5 will receive instruction about Internet safety which will include the Cyber Community, Personal Safety, Cyber Security, and Intellectual Property this marking period. Lessons and materials are from i-Safe, a leader in Internet safety education. The lessons are aligned with the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum School Library Media Standards, the National Educational Technology Standards for Students, and the National Health and Safety Standards.

These are the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum School Library Media Standards being taught during the fourth marking period:

Pre-K:

• Read, listen to, and discuss stories
• Make text-to-self connections
• Discover the pleasure of reading by listening to books
• Recognize the difference between fiction and nonfiction books

Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade:

• Discuss safety issues related to use of the Internet.
• Utilize circulation procedures and policies to access reading materials
• Practice selecting the most appropriate books for their need.
• Choose to browse, select, and enjoy books

3rd Grade, 4th Grade, 5th Grade:

• Continue to discuss safety issues related to the Internet and begin to follow safe practices.
• Continue to practice and independently apply strategies for complying with fair use and copyright laws.
• Utilize circulation procedures and policies to access reading materials.
• Become familiar with arrangement of materials in the library to select materials to meet current need.
• Practice selecting the most appropriate books for their need.
• Choose to browse, select, and enjoy books.

Thanks to everyone for their support of the library’s Scholastic Book Fair at the end of 2008-2009 school year. The profit from this event was again used to pay for the magazine subscriptions for our school library. The students really enjoy reading these magazines when they visit the library!
