Band News - February 2009

Our band is having a great year with our new members catching on quickly and trying very hard. We have a lot of talent and are working towards a super spring concert.

Remember to keep practicing. Never give up. Learning to play a musical instrument is certainly a challenge and takes years to master. Your first few years of band are the most important in terms of learning the basics. We’re very proud of your accomplishments and hope to see you participating in your school bands for many years to come.

Allegany County Invitational All County Honor Band

Select advanced fifth graders are invited to participate in the All County Band. Rehearsals start on February 24 and will last until mid April when we will present a public concert. This is a great opportunity for our students to participate in a band that represents all of Allegany County’s Elementary Schools. The directors of this exceptional group are Mr. Yarnall, Mr. Kuhn, Mr. Heavner and Mr. McClay. Transportation will be provided to and from the rehearsals. Parents are invited to help chaperone the bus rides to and from Cumberland. Please contact Mr. Yarnall if you are able to help chaperone.

FREE REEDS---Here is a special that you can take advantage of.

RICO reeds has a web based special—If you mail them ten used reeds from any competing company they will mail you ten new RICO reeds to try out. The web address for this special is:

Band Supplies- All students should be equipped with an instrument in good working order. If your instrument needs adjustment or repairs the early part of the summer is the best time to facilitate the repairs. Repairs can be made at several area music stores.

All clarinet and saxophone players should always have at least 3 reeds available for use. Number #2 reeds are the preferred reeds for students in our age group. All brass players should have a supply of valve and slide oil available for use. All students should have a good metal folding music stand for their personal use at home. Music stands can be purchase at any of our local music dealers. All students need to have their own copy of our method book “Essential Elements 2000”

Practice----It is often asked how much a fourth or fifth grade band student should practice. I recommend a minimum of 20 minutes of daily practice. The more you practice the quicker you will become proficient on your instrument. Without home practice, progress in school will be extremely slow.

Supplemental materials: Finding additional sources of printed music is often a challenge. Our local music stores have a nice supply of fun music books for elementary students. Now is a great time of year to add a little excitement in the material our students can play.

Beginning Band- Each September, Mr.Yarnall presents a program and introduces the various instruments that he teaches. We currently offer lessons on Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Baritone, Trombone, Tuba and Percussion. Each student will receive two ½ hour lessons per week during the school day. One lesson will be in a smaller group while the second lesson will be with the combined band. All students will be required to practice at home and prepare for their band lessons each week just at they would in any other class.

Band Instrument Quality—If you ever have any questions regarding the quality of an instrument or whether an instrument that you may have is suitable for your student to use please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Yarnall. He will be happy to help you evaluate an instrument. Generally most “Bargain” instruments are not suitable for student use as they may break easily and repair parts in many cases are not available.

Did you know?????? We have three Frost Elementary School Alumni that recently participated in the 2009 West Virginia University Invitational High School Honor Band---This is a great honor to our community and we’re very proud of the participating students who got there through hard work and perseverance. Evan Schutz—Trumpet, Joey Yarnall-Percussion, Danielle Sheilly-Woodwinds ---Keep up the hard work and best wishes in the future as you continue to represent our community. We hope to see more former Frost Students invited to participate in this type of event.

The Mountain Ridge High School Band won the Maryland State Marching Band Championship this past fall(2008) for their division. Way to go MRHS Band. It was a thrill for Mr. Yarnall to watch this event and to see many former Frost students take home top honors for MRHS.

Frostburg State University Music Major Karen Wolkow recently completed her student teaching internship with Mr. Yarnall. We wish Ms. Wolkow good luck as she begins her career as a professional music educator. Mr. Yarnall will supervise another student teacher later in the Spring 2009 semester.
